How to play WordRaid

WordRaid is a real-time team word-guessing game. One player gives a clue and the team tries to find the word before the round's time runs out. It's easy to learn and hard to put down. This guide covers everything, from the basics to the advanced modes.

The goal

Every match puts teams against each other to guess a series of words. Each round, one member gets the secret word and gives a clue; the others try to get it right by typing their guesses.

Guessing the word within the round's time scores points. Answering faster doesn't matter: you just have to get it before time runs out. The team that reaches the target score, or has the most points when the words run out, wins.

A round, step by step

The flow is always the same, in every game mode:

  1. Join a room. Pick a public room from the list, join with a code, or create your own. The room sets the language, the mode, and the team size.
  2. Form your team. You join a team. Rooms can have two or more teams, with one or more players each.
  3. Give or get the clue. On your turn as leader, you see the word and write a one-word clue (two at most, for compound terms). On the other turns, you are the one guessing.
  4. Guess the word. Type guesses in the match chat. What counts is getting the exact word before the round's time runs out; answering faster gives no extra points.
  5. Score and move on. Correct guesses within the time add points for the team. The game moves to the next word until it reaches the end or the target.

Roles and room types

  • Round leader. The one who gets the word and creates the clue. The role usually rotates between players, so everyone plays both sides.
  • Guessers. The rest of the team, trying to get the word from the clue within the round's time.
  • Several teams. Rooms can have two or more teams competing at the same time, with one or more players each.
  • Open room. Anyone can join from the public room list. Great for quick matches with new people.
  • Password room. It shows up in the list, but you need a password to get in. Handy for semi-public matches.
  • Private room. Only people with the invite can join. Ideal for playing with friends and no strangers in the room.

Game modes

WordRaid has several modes. The host picks one when creating the room, and each one changes the pace and the strategy:

  • Closed Clue. Rounds by team. The leader gives the clue and their team tries to guess it.
  • Open Clue. One clue for everyone. Every player can try to answer.
  • Time Attack. Limited time per leader. The team tries to score as many points as possible before the round ends.
  • Survival. Lives per team. A mistake costs a life and a correct answer can give it back.
  • Rotating Leader. The leader changes within the team whenever the word is guessed.
  • Wordle. The team guesses the hidden word and each guess reveals the letter status.
  • Mosaic. A board with several hidden words, and each submission applies to the whole board.
  • Infiltrator. One infiltrator doesn't know the secret word. Give clues and find out who's faking it.
  • In Sync. Pairs write a word at the same time, without planning, until they match.
  • Say It Backwards. The leader records a word, the room hears it backwards, imitates it and tries to guess.

Casual or Competitive

In casual mode, you play for fun, with no ranking pressure. It is perfect for relaxing or learning a new mode.

In competitive (ranked) mode, your matches count toward a season ranking. Wins raise your standing, and fair play is taken seriously: leaving ranked matches or cheating has consequences.

Languages and dictionaries

Each language has its own word dictionary, just like classic word games. When you create a room, you choose the language, and the match only uses words from that dictionary.

Quick match search favors rooms in your language. Players from different countries can also meet in the same room by agreeing on a common language. It is a great way to practice and make friends around the world.

Tips to do well

  • Keep the clue direct. Clear, specific clues help the team get the word within the time.
  • Play together. Follow your teammates' guesses: sometimes the answer is just one word away.
  • Read the clue calmly. Reading the clue well is worth more than guessing in the dark. Think before you guess.
  • Watch the clock. Get your guess in before the timer hits zero, especially in the timed modes.
  • Do your best as leader. When it is your turn to give the clue, think of something only your team would easily get.
  • Respect the room. Good conduct keeps the match fun for everyone and avoids penalties.
